GATE Eligibility & Identification

The GATE Eligibility Process for identifying new GATE students begins in November of each year. New students are notified in December for the spring session of the program.

GATE Referrals

Referrals for screening for GATE eligibility can be made by teachers, administrators, parents, counselors, and the GATE coordinator. Parents may inform their teacher that they would like their child screened for GATE.

Multiple Criteria Score

GATE identification is based on a student's combined score on:

  1. Smarter Balanced-STAR-CELDT Tests: The scaled scores from the California Assessments in English-Language Arts and Math, STAR Reading and Math and the California English Language Development Test.
  2. Teacher/demographic Evaluation Scale: The scale is used as an additional tool to assess the GATE eligibility of referred students.

Identified students whose total Multiple Criterion Scale score places them among the top 5-10% of candidates at the intermediate grade level population become GATE eligible and are invited to participate in the GATE program.
